I started Little Brown Bird in 2000, I finished it in Jan. of 2007, when I started this quilt I knew practically nothing about applique, but I fell in love with this quilt the pattern is by Margaret Docherty, I had the honor of meeting her in Paducah several years ago.
My favorite block is the rose basket, so much life happy and sad has occured while I worked on this quilt as I was working rose basket over Mothers' day weekend 2001, my mother passed away shortly after that . Mom loved seeing all these beautiful blocks, she wondered if I would ever finish this quilt so Happy mothers' day mom I did it!!

Needleturn applique is something I hadn't thought of trying until the class you taught in St. Louis. And as I kept watching over your shoulder as you worked on LBB that time, I was inspired. Needleturn has become something I really enjoy doing. Thanks, Betty! :)

It is totally amazing Betty! I can't believe you did all that! How is it quilted? What a wonderful Mother's Day tribute to her! Everytime I see it I'm just awe struck!
One of the things I've noticed about quilts is that sometimes you attach memories of an important event to the quilt you're working on when that event occurs. I still remember the quilt I was working on when we started bombing Iraq. Your quilt is beautiful and what nice memories of your mom are stitched into it!

Hi Betty, I'm so far behind reading blogs because I've been trying to spend at least half my free time actually quilting. Of course we've seen pictures of this quilt on the yahoo group, but I don't ever remember seeing a close-up of anyh of the blocks. This basket is certainly a work of art. The fabrics you've chosen, and the way you've used the shading in those fabrics make these flowers look almost real. I am once again in total awe of this quilt. What a work of art you have created here.
That is such a lovely quilt, is there any way I could talk you into posting more close-ups of it?
I know what you mean about a quilt having memories attached to it. I have one that I made while my daughter was very ill in the hospital. She's fine now, but that quilt will always remind me of that time and the feelings that went along with it.

I was wondering if you had taken a very close look at the cover of the Derby races book? If you still have it and look closely at it you will see it is actually a quilt.
